The Kizhi museum is the largest open air museum of Russia located on Kizhi Island in Lake Onega, 68 km from Petrozavodsk, the capital of Karelia, and 425 km from Saint Petersburg.

The Kizhi museum is one of the ten main visual symbols of Russia. It is the unique museum of peasant culture and wooden architecture of the Russian North.

In 2014 the Kizhi museum was ranked top ten Russian museums according to customer reviews of the world's largest travel portal TripAdvisor. In 2015 authoritative British newspaper The Telegraph included the Church of the Transfiguration in the list of the most beautiful churches of the world.

In 1990 the Kizhi Architectural Ensemble was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with the Moscow Kremlin and the historical center of Saint Petersburg

How to get there:

The easiest way to get to Kizhi is a hydrofoil boat from Petrozavodsk (the capital of Karelia). One way trip lasts 1 h.15 min. You can also start from Velikaya Guba village (270 km. from Petrozavodsk) by a private speed boat. Kizhi Museum offers a variety of programmes with a transfer to Kizhi Island. You can also get to Kizhi Island from the village of Velikaya Guba, Medvezhiegorsk region.

Places to Stay:

There are no guest houses or hotels on Kizhi Island due to the restrictions of a protected area. However, many guest houses are located around the island (see Kizhi map).
